We really don't understand how prolonged it takes. There have been makes an attempt to attempt to date inclusions in numerous components of diamonds, and those have largely been unsuccessful. It is perhaps that diamonds kind over durations as temporary a time as days, weeks, months to thousands and thousands of years. Typically, as with many crystals that develop on the Earth, it's not a gradual process. The diamonds might begin to develop after which there could also be an interruption for some function – a change in circumstances, temperature, pressure, provide of carbon, no matter—they usually could sit for tens of hundreds of thousands, a whole bunch of million of years, after which begin rising again. That's a part of the problem of attempting to place some sort of a progress period on them; issues don't always occur constantly within the Earth.
